Floodsax alternative sandbags saved the day when a top Yorkshire bridal shop started to suffer from flooding.
Torrential rain caused rising water which threatened Dotty Bridal on Huddersfield Road in Holmfirth near Huddersfield.
But the water was kept at bay by the sandless sandbags.
Dotty Bridal owner Shannon Martin said: “We had an emergency situation when the storms began. My colleague Beth quickly got onto the phone to FloodSax and was able to obtain a number of FloodSax.
“They were amazing and so much better and cleaner than the traditional sandbags. They kept the rising water at bay and solved our flood issues perfectly.”
Dotty Bridal (https://dottybridal.co.uk/) is a multi-award-winning boutique named in honour of Shannon’s late grandmother, Dorothy.
Spread over three floors split into private suites with floor to ceiling mirrors, it features more than 170 wedding dresses from designers including Abella, Allure Couture, Jane Hill, Justin Alexander, Madison James and Pronovias.
FloodSax resemble large pillowcases in their dry state but once fully immersed in water they absorb the water in their special gelling polymer and expand to resemble traditional sandbags but are easier to handle and build into flood defences.
Local councils have no responsibility to provide sandbags to homes or businesses so people have to organise their own flood protection.
The Environment Agency states: “Don’t assume the authorities will provide you with sandbags in a flood emergency. It is the responsibility of property owners to take appropriate action to protect their property from flooding. Sandbags are relatively ineffective when compared to purpose-built flood protection products. We strongly encourage people to use these products.”
FloodSax are used to protect homes and businesses from flooding both inside and out and are recommended by several local councils as a better alternative to traditional sandbags.
