A Yorkshire company sprang into action when a day nursery was hit by a serious flood.
Torrential rain started to send floodwater from the outdoor play area through a fire door at the Little Explorers Day Nursery in Huddersfield.
Environmental Defence Systems Ltd is based nearby and the company is famous for its alternative sandbags called FloodSax with almost 3 million sold worldwide.
They popped straight down with a box of 20 FloodSax which EDS special project manager Jessica Bailey quickly deployed both inside and outside the nursery to stop the flood.
FloodSax resemble large pillowcases in their dry state but once fully immersed in water they absorb the water in their special gelling polymer and expand to resemble traditional sandbags but are easier to handle and build into flood defences. They are ideal for instant flood protection.
Just two FloodSax were enough to stop the water pouring in with a further two FloodSax in their dry state popped inside the door to soak up any water that had already got in.
Owner Leanne Gothard from Little Explorers (http://littleexplorershuddersfield.co.uk/) said: “We had an issue with water coming in one of our doors due to a storm and the Floodsax acted as a defence to stop the water from coming in but they also soaked the water up too.
“I would highly recommend Floodsax as an amazing product but also the customer service we received was outstanding.”
Local councils have no responsibility to provide sandbags to homes or businesses so people have to organise their own flood protection.
The Environment Agency states: “Don’t assume the authorities will provide you with sandbags in a flood emergency. It is the responsibility of property owners to take appropriate action to protect their property from flooding. Sandbags are relatively ineffective when compared to purpose-built flood protection products. We strongly encourage people to use these products.”
FloodSax are used to protect homes and businesses from flooding both inside and out and are recommended by several local councils as a better alternative to traditional sandbags.
